It's also rapidly becoming a mainstream form of dance music around the world. Dubstep has quickly become a popular part of the dance music scene in countries like the UK and the United States for its modern sound and make. As the former lead singer in a sceamo band named From First to Last, Skrillex has become one of the most famous dubstep artist. Though he happens to be one of the most famous he was not the originator of the genre. Adegbenga Adejumo aka Benga and Oliver Dene Jones aka Skream were two of the first artists to create what we now call dubstep. The artists knew it as “UK garage” and they would try and best the others beat at local clubs. This type of music is what morphed day dubstep.

What

Dubstep is an expansion off of electronic music combines heavy bass, samples, synthesizers, and drum tracks. All music describes dubstep as
“tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals.” More specifically dubstep usually consist of samples over top of a low frequency bass line that usually oscillates. Bass is what defines dubstep, but it also contains elements of trance music, electronica, hip-hop and even pop. Most importantly is what is know as the wobble bass. Wobble bass is a new creation of electronic music where bass notes are extended and manipulated digitally on computers with a low-frequency oscillators and other filters.

Dubstep is much more than just its wobble bass, although that has certainly grown to be one of the most identifying characteristic. One of the most notable characteristics is the structure of the songs. Dubstep historically has been made up of a few sections consisting of the intro, the bass drop, the main riff also known as the mid section, and the outro. The second section, the bass drop, is what made dubstep just so popular in the first place. "Typically in a bass drop, the percussion will freeze or the existing intro track will start to fade into the background. After a brief pause, all hell breaks loose and overwhelming bass invades the track that is essentially carried throughout the rest of the tune."

  • Dubstep’s Impact on Society:
Dubstep obviously isn’t as important as other events in history but it is important to society to some degree. It brought many different people together. It evolved from the sounds of Jamaican Dub music as well as from British Jungle and Garage music. And though the popularity of dubstep began to expand initially in the UK it is now growing in popularity all over the world including here in the United States. Dubstep concerts occur from the U.S. to Germany. Dubstep is becoming so popular that even some American pop artists are beginning to incorporate it into their music. For example, the dubstep artist Flux Pavilion originally made a song entitled I Can’t Stop, then Kanye West and Jay-Z made the song Who Gon Stop Me in which they used Flux Pavilion’s song. Another example proving that dubstep is beginning to influence American society is the fact that Skrillex, the famous dubstep artist, won 3 Grammy best dance recording, best remixed recording, non-classical and best dance/electronica album. Grammy awards are one of the most praised awards for music artists so this proves my point that dubstep has impacted American society.
